I graduated & got a job because I needed the money and because I was exploring career options. First job (temp) helped me to rule out social media as a focus area (find it interesting, not all day/every day though). Second job (perm) has taught be a lot and pointed me in a good direction for the next few years… even if it is bottom-of-the-totem-pole.
If I didn’t have to work, I’d probably have done a few work/volunteer abroad experiences to narrow my focus more before getting my masters. But I’d always want to work… the idea of sitting around, playing tennis & getting manicures–all day, every day–isn’t too appealing to me. Most days.
I haven’t graduated from college yet, but the reason for me getting a job at first was have my own money and bu the things that I wanted. It was in no way, shape, or form career oriented. Things are different now to the fact that I want to work in my career field and I also need money to survive and to acquire the needed materials to push my career further.
It’s in the past now and can’t be changed, but if you had to advise someone else who may be getting their first job soon, would you suggest they find jobs that would lead to a career rather than jobs that will give them their own money?
Hmm. That’s a tricky one. Since this would be their first job I can’t imagine that they have many expenses, so I would say get something right now that would put some cash in your pocket but use it as a stepping stone to something that puts them in the right direction to the path they want to follow in life.
