New to me is a feature that will add on to the two once new features of Twitter: Who To Follow and Name Results, which will make it that much easier to determine whether or not to follow someone. Many people are not a fan of the Who To Follow function because they’ve either already unfollowed the people being suggested to them, or they’re not getting enough everyday users of Twitter. Since so many people follow celebrities, a person who does not follow celebrities on purpose will not find Who To Follow useful. This new Followed By feature may be useful, though, because it will enable people to hone their follow strategy based on the accounts they find on their own.
When you find someone’s account, you will see a line of text within the bar that gives you the option to follow someone. This line of text gives you three names and the number of other accounts that you follow that also follow this account. On the sidebar above the images of who that account is following is another section that says: “You both follow” with images, as well.
Twitter hopes that these changes will help new users and veteran tweeters find more value in their service by widening the range of accounts that people follow. Considering Slate’s latest piece on How Black People Use Twitter, maybe these features will help to add some balance into follower networks. By following people who use Twitter for more than entertainment purposes all day every day, many Twitter users will find that they can learn more than what makes people “#wonderwhy”.

The problem I find with the Slate article, and much of the commentary that has followed it, is that it’s laden with the implication that SOME PEOPLE are “using Twitter wrong”.
Whose to say that someone needs to expand their Twitter users beyond those there purely for entertainment purposes? What if that’s what you do for entertainment? What if you only log into Twitter for the Trending Topics or to waste time with friends? Why does there HAVE to be a higher purpose for everyone’s Twitter use?
This is like being angry at people for not using email for “business purposes”. Short of an email account issued to you for business purposes, what right does someone have to tell you what you should or shouldn’t do with it?
I get it, everybody’s got “advice” for how you should use Twitter (including Twitter themselves), but a lot of it simply isn’t very helpful, in my opinion.

The problem I have with folks who use Twitter for entertainment purposes only is that they are the first to complain about new features and how it should better work for them. Clearly they’re not trying to follow anybody new, so the feature isn’t for them; and, they shouldn’t be vocal about it. The other part of that is that they complain about Twitter being boring or that they need new people to follow. Well, this is why Twitter is making these new features. Try them. I agree that there is no correct way to use Twitter, and I like having fun too; but, life isn’t just about entertainment. Twitter can be used to improve people’s lives, and they’re missing out on many opportunities when they use it strictly for that purpose.
